Nation, Gender, Genre: A Comparative Social Network Analysis of Irish and British Fiction (1800-1922)

Combining literary and data science expertise, this project maps and analyses social networks in Irish and English fiction, 1800-1922. It explores how writers and readers have imagined the connections between people in their society and turned those connections into plots. The project, funded by the Irish Research Council, has completed work on 46 novels to date. The three initial case studies here are showcased to demonstrate the new perspectives which social network analysis can open up on well known novels.

UCD Digital Library

UCD Digital Library refers to the digital collections and online services made available by the Library of University College Dublin. It is an archive comprising an organisation, namely, the UCD Library and particularly its Research Services and Information Technology Services divisions, and technical systems, namely, the UCD Digital Repository and its services framework. It is a curated, preservation-oriented resource that seeks to comply to internationally endorsed best practices and standards for an OAIS-compliant Trusted Digital Repository.

  • research data arising from activity at UCD and elsewhere

UCD Digital Library staff also offer expertise in digital content management and preservation as well as related policy matters, such as Open Access. As a service, it can publish outcomes of your research, including research data.

Joyce’s Dublin

This audio podcast series showcases James Joyce’s short story ‘The Dead’ from his collection ‘Dubliners’ and explores themes within the story drawing on scholarly research and connecting it with the archive collections in UCD, the National Library and the National Archives. The project is designed to draw users into further reading and research with both the original text and archival documents.

Joyce’s Dublin; An exploration of ‘The Dead’ has been commissioned by the UCD Humanities Institute and produced by Athena Media. The series is presented by Barry McGovern. Century Ireland

The Century Ireland project is an online historical newspaper that tells the story of the events of Irish life a century ago. Century Ireland is published on a fortnightly basis, beginning in May 2013, and is the main online portal for the Irish decade of commemorations, 1912-23.

News reporting on life in Ireland 100 years ago is supported by a wealth of visual, archival and contextual material to facilitate an understanding of the complexities of Irish life in the year between 1912 and 1923. Century Ireland is produced by a team of researchers at Boston College Ireland and the project is funded by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

Century Ireland is hosted by RTÉ and the site is complimented by their broadcast schedule and material from the RTÉ archives.

The Library has digitised the Lawrence (Royal & Cabinet), Poole Whole Plate and Independent Newspapers (1912 -1936), Clarke, Eason, Keogh, Stereo Pairs and Tempest glass plate collections and these images are now accessible, at a low resolution and with basic information, through the Digital Photographs database.

The Warburg Institute School of Advanced Study University of London

One of the Warburg’s distinctive features has always been its engagement with what are often considered the superstitious, irrational and emotional elements of cultural phenomena.
